뼈 해장국 Byeo Haejangguk (Bone hangover soup)

From the first taste I knew this was a winner, it’s hearty, spicy soup won me over big time.

Haejangguk or hangover soup is usually consumed the morning after a heavy night of drinking as the soup is thought to cure your hangover.

In the soup is a combination of beef/ox tail bones, cabbage, chilli, other vegetables and beef/ox blood. This makes for a hearty, spicy soup that warms and nourishes you from the core.

There was a decent amount of meat in amongst the tail bones but you really had to dig for the tasty morsels. The meat was so soft and tender it just gave way under the slightest bit of pressure which made the job that much easier.

If I’m comparing it to others I would say it’s similar to 육개장 Yukgyejang but a lot heartier. There is much more of a beef taste in the soup. Although each has it’s pros and cons.

I rate it  10/12 – the number of bones left over once you pick the tail sections clear of meat.
